Tips to keep your skin moisturized. The colder weather brings dry skin, so below are some of the steps I follow to keep my skin moisturized when temperatures drop.

1. Give yourself a good scrub
Tips to moisturize your skin

The secret to soft, glowy skin is getting rid of the dead skin on your body. In the shower, grab a loofa, gloves, or a body scrub and give your whole body a good rub. I like to turn off the shower so as to conserve water. I got these gloves at Target and they were very affordable. I find they cut down the scrubbing time in half. I sometimes like to make my own at-home body scrub, simply by mixing sugar with a regular body wash in a cup and going to town. I like to scrub my whole body in the shower once a week.

2. Oil it up

After your full-body scrub,  your skin will be at its most sensitive- remember that is all new skin showing now. This is a good time to use baby oil, or coconut oil all over. It’s OK if your skin is still a little wet post shower, because this will help lock the moisture in.

3. Lotion is the best potion

To really lock in the moisture you need a second layer of moisturizer. In the winter, use a thicker formula than you use in the summer. In the winter I like to amp up things a little by putting baby oil in my lotion.

4. Petroleum jelly for the win

Finish up your post-shower routine by using petroleum jelly in the dry spots. In my case, it’s my feet (find out how you can have soft soles year round here), knees and elbows.

5. Now for the face

I never leave my house without moisturizing SPF. As I’ve told you many times before, I love to use, and swear by Neutrogena’s Oil Free Moisture with Sunscreen. Most people say SPF 15 is enough, but I like to use SPF 35, even if I have olive skin, because living in New York I have to walk everywhere and I’m exposed to the sun a lot. Did you know that sun rays get through windows as well? Maybe everyone should start switching up to a higher SPF.

I recently discovered Neutrogena’s CoolDry Sport Sunscreen with SPF 70. I’m going to be wearing it to go to the pool this summer, or during picnics in Central Park. It has a thicker consistency and it’s sweat and water resistant, so it’s perfect if you’re the sporty, outdoorsy type. You should wear it this winter if you’re planning on hitting the slopes!

6. Nighttime moisture

Moisturized skin

It’s important to give your skin a little more moisturize at night than you do during the day. Someone recommended I put on a thin layer of coconut oil before my regular moisturizer, but since I suffer from occasional break outs, the coconut oil wasn’t really doing it for me. I find argan oil to work much better. But everyone is different- what works for some may not work for others.

I recently switched to Neutrogena’s Pink Grapefruit Oil-Free Acne Moisturizer because the salicylic acid  helps fight break outs, and it’s not oily because of its non greasy formula. This is more of a summer moisturizer, but in the winter I just keep replaying it throughout the night before bed. I love how it smells- it’s invigorating! I’ve even started wearing it underneath my daily SPF for a little extra moisture and acne control.

You can get all of these products (except maybe for the argan and coconut oil, which you can find at your local beauty supply store) at Target. You’ll be able to find the Oil Free Acne Moisturizer on the beauty/face aisle, and the CoolDry Sport Sunscreen will be in the sun care aisle. Here’s a coupon for 10% off Neutrogena cosmetics and another one for 5% off Neutrogena facial skin care.

Now you tell me, how do you like to keep your skin moisturized?
